“SUNSHINE IN THE HEART”
by Roberto Dansie

“Good morning Mr. Such and Such,” the receptionist says with a smile that makes you feel you are about to enter heaven, “how can I help you?” The lady asked you this with real meaning. It was not an empty phrase. She is there; ready to help you and enjoying every minute of it.

Your hesitation doesn’t bother her at all. “I would like to see the doctor.” “Okay,” the lady says, and she turns to her computer. “Do you have an appointment?” You shake your head. “When would you like to see the doctor?” “I was hoping I would get a chance to see him today.” The receptionist looks at the schedule, and tells you “Your appointment is scheduled in 45 minutes” and shows you to a waiting room where you can sit, take some juice and fruit, and read some really interesting health articles. You wait there for a while. As you get up, you run into the janitor, who greets you.

You wonder how come people, regardless of the position they occupy in the organization, are so well disposed to serve you. You decide to ask her about it. “Excuse me, Ma’am,” you say, “how come everyone here seems so happy?” You know budgets and you know how, even with high salaries, most people in the health field tend to lose passion for what they do. The lady tells you that this is your clinic, and they feel it is important for you to be comfortable in it. You agree, and ask “Do they pay you enough for this job?” The lady smiles and says “money is not what makes one happy, it is us who can make ourselves happy.” The lady seems content and worry free. You look into here eyes. No. There is no sign of drugs. The lady is genuinely happy.

You want to ask more questions, but they inform you that the doctor is ready to see you. You enter the exam room and you find simplicity, cleanliness, and peace. There is some relaxing music in the background; you recognize the sound of waves breaking onto the rocky shores. You can almost breathe the salt in the air.

The doctor, in casual clothes, comes in. He is an elderly man, moved by a jovial spirit. “Pretty day out there,” he says. You look at him and shake his offered hand. He takes a look at your eyes and asks you, “Are you getting enough sunshine in your heart?” The question is weird. “I beg your pardon?” “Is your heart in the path that you have been following?” he asks. You wonder about this question for a minute or two. You came here because you needed a check up of your cholesterol. You have been eating junk, not exercising, and working too many hours. The financial pressures have been building up and you have to present endless reports to your bosses. There is simply not enough minutes in the day for you to find some time for yourself. Time is just using you up. You still have no answer. Doctor puts his right hand on your should and looks at you warmly in the eyes. “Everything is going to be Okay,” he says, and a moment later you feel like a child who is putting on his sneakers to go out exploring the forest. Not a care in the world. Your worries are fading away. In their place, you find yourself under a beautifully, large blue sky, the sun warming your face. You doubt for a moment, but those words come back to you again. “Everything is going to be Okay,” and the fresh air returns to you. Nearby you find a creek. “Go ahead,” the voice tells you, and you find yourself looking into its transparent waters - movement, timelessness, and forms, meet at the creek. The face of a man comes from your reflection from the creek. It doesn’t matter. Your age doesn’t matter. It is still you, that you that most of your later years has seemed so unreachable. Perhaps this you is the one that your family misses. Perhaps it is this you that you miss the most too. This you is the one that was at home in the forest.

A moment later, you open your eyes and you are sitting in the exam room, the old doctor in front of you. “Your heart is strong,” he says “you are back”. He means that today you are fully alive; that this wonderful day you have returned to your heart. “I am going home,” you say, eager to get to your family.

As you arrive, you notice your little house in all of its details. You are coming home. You are in your heart, your heart is in the man; the man is coming to his family, the man is home. Everything finally fits. Your wife welcomes you. One look into your eyes, and she notices. “Oh my God!” she says, “You are back” and embraces you. That which is essential is back in your eyes. Then you realize that it was this spark that you saw at the clinic. It was there in the receptionist. It was there with the janitor. It was there in the doctor. Now, it is back in your eyes, you have been healed. The world becomes heaven when there is sunshine in your heart.
